“In the world of competitive gaming, you aren’t just what you play. You are who you represent. This week, after two years of digital skirmishes, the Lossie Phantoms finally found their skin.

Hardware, Software, & Polyester: The Phantoms’ New Skin.

Established in 2022, the Lossie Phantoms are the official RAF Lossiemouth Station Esports Club. As the person overseeing the club, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about our “ohhh scary” branding. We lean heavily into the phantom aesthetic, predominantly purple and black, which suggests a level of spectral menace that we rarely actually possess in person. We are, I can safely say, far more friendly than our logo implies.

But friendliness doesn’t win digital battles. Identity does. Some might argue skill as well, but not in this blog and certainly not in my head!

To create a Phantom skin from a concept into a proper club attire, I went to a website called MyClub. They are effectively the creators of team visions, capable of taking a description and a crest and manifesting it into a bespoke kit.

Usually, procurement in any official MOD capacity involves a paper trail longer than a runway and a cost-per-unit that suggests the shirts are woven from unicorn mane. To find a service that delivers this level of quality without the usual eye-watering markup isn’t easy. But thanks to My club, it actually felt like successfully navigating a minefield while wearing flip-flops.

When designing the first-ever Lossie Phantoms shirt, I wanted every stitch to carry a narrative weight. I didn’t just slap a logo on a polyester blend; I designed a legacy:

  • The Heart of the Club: The original club crest, positioned on the left breast in its rightful place.
  • The Spectral Signature: A ghost icon on the left sleeve, leaning into the phantom lore.
  • The Founders’ Mark: A specific patch on the right sleeve celebrating the opening of our esports arena on Station.

I’ll admit, I suffered a moment of tactical doubt. I only ordered ten units, terrified I’d be left with a surplus of purple fabric. I grossly underestimated the demand. Between the team and the personal requirement to kit out my own kids, the “Founders Edition” sold out before the ink was dry on the pre-order sheet.

The final result is, frankly, a “banger.” MyClub delivered a pixelated design that utilises three distinct shades of purple, custom names, and, in a touch of pure class, golden cuffs and collars.

“Oh, but what about the back of the jersey?” I hear you shouting at the screen. Well dear reader, this is the location for the player’s Gamertag and unique number. It looks less like a jersey and more like a statement of intent with a personal calling card.

Identity matters in all walks of life. A big part of what I do is about the “Umbrella.” In a club setting, everyone needs feel like they are under one. A shared collective of friendship, ambition and togetherness no matter what is thrown at them. These shirts are the first tentative steps of galvanising this feeling of belonging, also my first foray into the world of merchandising for me. This is a side of the business I’m keen to learn as I look toward hosting and managing larger franchises in the future once I leave the Lossie Phantoms with the RAF and take my first steps in civvy street.

Until then, it was a big moment for my beloved Phantoms. We’ve found our colors. We’ve established our look. Now, we just have to live up to the gold on the cuffs!
